1st review: A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness & Siobhan Dowd
About the book:
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness & Siobhan Dowd
Published by: Candlewick Press September 15 2011
Genre: YA, paranormal
Pages: 224 pages
Synopsis: It's the story of Conor, a young boy who's mother is ill. One night, a little bit after midnight, a monster comes to his windows and he claims that he wants the truth. That's all you need to know.
My thoughts: I think it's a very moving story of facing your own fears. I think it's a very good book if you're into character growth focused stories. I really liked it as i was facing kind of the same problems that Conor was facing. And I think that the monster thing is really a cool way to tell the story. Patrick Ness and Siobhan Dowd wrote a beautiful story and i'll read more books of these authors later on for sure.
My rating: 4/5 stars
Sad parts : Yes
Funny parts : Rare
Action: Sometimes, but the story is more personnal growth focused
Who should read that book: If you want a moving story and you don't need fast-pace. Yeah, it's made for you. READ IT. (Ps: I read this after the whole divergent serie and i wasn't bored, so it's good OK?)
About the authors:
Siobhan Dowd was a british writer. She has written quite a few books such as A Swift Pure Cry and The London Eye Mistery. She faced her own terminal illness when she wrote A Monster Calls but didn't have the chance to finish it. As Patrick Ness well said «She had the characters, a premise, and a beginning. What she didn't have, unfortunately, was time»
That's where Patrick Ness comes along. He's a american born, but now british author. He's known for the Chaos Walking trilogy (that i will read one day for sure). The trilogy has won a lot of prize, the first one in the series winning a lot of prizes such as Booktrust Teenage prize and the Guardian Children's fiction prize.
You may have noticed, but these two are pretty damn good authors. You won't be disappointed with this book.
